Stay tuned for more reflections from youth who complete our summer programming.
Welcome to the Minds in Motion Summer Series, an empowering summer experience hosted by the Families Leading Youth (FLY) Foundation. Built specifically for middle and high school students, our summer program brings youth together in small peer cohorts to build confidence, discover their voices, and lead healthy, purposeful lives.
Operating as a vibrant community hub where traditional youth centers do not exist, we blend academic success, cultural enrichment, and generational wellness. Through our unique partnership with local schools and the Blue Zones Project, we give teens a safe, supportive space to heal, grow, and own their future.
The Minds in Motion Summer Series is more than a summer camp it is a launchpad for the next generation. By embedding Blue Zones principles of movement, purpose, connection, and intergenerational wellness into every day, we ensure our middle and high school students return to school stronger, healthier, and ready to lead.
This summer, the FLY Foundation’s Minds in Motion Juneteenth Summer Series brought young people together to explore history, culture, and the true meaning of freedom. Through community discussions, cultural traditions, and shared meals, our participants engaged in deep reflection.
The transformation was profound. Over the course of the series, our youth shifted from having a surface-level awareness of the holiday to developing a nuanced, empathetic understanding of history and resilience.
When the summer series began, many participants viewed Juneteenth simply as a standard calendar date or a general holiday about Black history. However, as we dove deeper into the historical timeline, their perspectives rapidly evolved.
Our discussions highlighted several key areas of growth and learning:
Uncovering the Truth of Delayed Freedom: Participants learned the harsh reality that emancipation was not immediate. They grappled with the historical fact that news of freedom was intentionally withheld, forcing many enslaved people to endure years of continued bondage and struggle with a lack of resources even after learning the truth.
Connecting Culture to Resilience: The series helped youth look beyond the textbook. They successfully connected cultural traditions, historical facts, and traditional foods directly to the enduring spirit and resilience of the Black community.
Shifting to Collective Honor: By the end of the summer, the sentiment around Juneteenth shifted from a passive acknowledgment of "freedom" to an active celebration. Participants now view the holiday as a vital way to honor ancestors and actively preserve history.
To see the true impact of the program, we look to the shifting perspectives of the youth themselves. When asked to reflect on what Juneteenth meant to them before and after the series, their growth spoke volumes:
"Before this summer, I thought Juneteenth was just a specific date where only Black people were free. Now, I see it as a time where Black people actively celebrate freedom. I learned that slavery actually ended years later because enslaved people were not immediately told the truth."
"To be completely real, because of the name, I used to think Juneteenth was just a holiday for teenagers to hang out in June. This summer totally changed my mind. I learned it’s actually a super important day in history about enslaved people getting their freedom, and it matters for everyone, not just teens."
"I used to think it was just a broad holiday about Black history. But during our sessions, my perspective deepened. I learned that some enslaved people actually had to stay because they had nowhere to go and weren't told they were free. It made me realize the harsh realities faced after emancipation."
"To me, it used to just mean 'freedom.' Now, I understand that Juneteenth honors enslaved people and the long journey of how they gained that freedom. It helped me connect our culture, food, and history directly to our community's resilience."
The true success of the Minds in Motion series lies in these shifting perspectives. By confronting the complexities of the past, our youth didn't just memorize dates they deepened their historical empathy and walked away with a profound appreciation for community, resilience, and the ongoing importance of remembering our shared history.
This July, Families Leading Youth (FLY) invites youth and families to participate in our Mind & Motion Summer Series, a month-long celebration of wellness, learning, and community connection. Rooted in our Generational Wellness initiative, this series is designed to bring families together through hands-on activities that promote healthy habits, build confidence, and strengthen relationships. From exploring the outdoors through camping and nature-based learning to getting your hands in the soil through gardening, participants will have opportunities to learn new skills while creating lasting memories.
The series also features a special Healthy Cooking Made Simple class presented by the Blue Zones Project, where families will learn practical ways to prepare nutritious, affordable meals using simple ingredients. Throughout the month, youth and families can stay active through outdoor games and recreational activities, including kickball, volleyball, basketball, and swimming. Every event is designed to support physical health, emotional well-being, and meaningful community engagement. Together, we are helping build stronger families, healthier habits, and brighter futures because when families thrive, communities thrive. Together, We Fly.
The Real Life Ready program equips youth with practical skills they can use today and throughout their lives. Through hands-on learning in budgeting, financial literacy, career exploration, interview preparation, and goal setting, participants gain the knowledge and confidence needed to make informed decisions about their future. These experiences help young people build independence, develop leadership skills, and discover pathways to education, employment, and personal success.
Families benefit by seeing their youth grow in confidence, responsibility, and self-sufficiency while participating in a supportive and encouraging environment. The program fosters positive peer connections, exposes youth to new opportunities, and provides resources that help families prepare for long-term success. By investing in life skills, leadership development, and future planning, Real Life Ready empowers young people to reach their potential while strengthening the overall well-being of the families and communities they belong to.
Program Benefits Include:
Increased confidence and self-esteem
Improved financial literacy and money management skills
Greater career awareness and future planning
